Product or business branding and Personal Branding are different although they share many of the same tactics and strategies.
When I worked in brand management for the Procter & Gamble Company, I focused on communicating to consumers what the products did and how they did it.
Personal Branding is effective when you communicate a unique and valuable “why.” You won’t maximize the enormous benefits of having your Personal Brand unless you clearly leverage the what and your why.
Personal Brands do have to be nurtured. They need to be tweaked. Sometimes it’s just packaging. Sometimes it’s a bit deeper. And sometimes, you need to flip your Personal Brand to an entirely new and improved one. That’s called personal development… personal growth. All great Personal Brands continue to learn and evolve.
Maybe you need to add a health focus to your Personal Brand because you’ve let yourself go physically. Maybe you need to lift weights. Perhaps you need to improve your vocabulary. Perhaps your style is unremarkable when it should be fabulous. Whatever! You’ve got to decide.
Who do you want to be?
What kind of brand do you want to be?
What do you want to make happen?
What do you do differently from someone else?
You need to answer these questions quickly and well because the clock-of-life is ticking and it does not care that you waste your life. The sooner you answer these questions, the sooner you can start making a real difference in your life and the lives of others, at work and at home.
What Personal Brand are you married to? Oh yes. Your relationships are with Personal Brands. Think about that one for a moment. What kind of Personal Brands are you connected to? Hmmm. Do these connections reflect you? Do they hold you back or propel you forward?
Personal Branding is about the greatness in you coming out. It’s about those talents in you bursting forth. You were brought into this world to do something special and to make a difference. You must bring the real you out for the benefit of others. Your strengths, passions, skills, values and uniqueness.
